Intentions 2016

Resolutions are made to be broken, which is why I’m not a big fan of them. I do like to periodically set and revisit intentions for myself though. This year I’m keeping it simple with just three that I think will help me make the most of this crazy life I’m living!

1) Continue My Slow and Steady Study of the German Language

It can be really discouraging to have lived in Switzerland for over a year and still not even have a kindergartener’s grasp on the German language. I think it’s important to look at how far I’ve come in a year though. I moved here not even knowing how to greet people in Swiss German and now I can take the train, order in a restaurant and read the headlines in the morning commuter paper. I’ve learned a lot about what doesn’t work for me (route classroom learning) and a little bit about what does (fun language apps that make learning a game) and now I feel ready to get out there and push myself to talk to people more.

I may be crazy, but I actually find German a fun language to speak and listen to… Especially the Swiss dialect! I’ve been told that language is the key to truly understanding a culture, so I’m not giving up on this one!

2) Travel In My Own Backyard More

When I first moved to Europe my focus was on far flung dream destinations like Budapest, Prague and Lisbon. But I’ve been ignoring all of the hidden gems that are right around the corner from me. Yeah, I’ve got a big trip to Iceland planned, but this year will be a lot more about local travel for me. We’re talking small towns, back alleys and maybe even a remote mountain village or two. There’s so much to see within three hours of Zürich and I plan to take advantage of it with more day trips and overnight jaunts.

3) Mindfulness Everywhere, Everyday, In Every Way

It’s time for me to finally find my yoga home in Switzerland. But it’s about more than that. It’s about creating space in my everyday life to meditate, savor the moment and care for myself. No more Manic Miss Apple! I’ll be managing my stress, eating my veggies and striving for balance both on and off the road. I pretty much have two speeds in life, Full Throttle and Under the Duvet so this intention will be the most challenging. But it’s probably the most important one. If anybody has some suggestions on creating more balance in life I’d be happy to hear them. I’ve been to yoga school, meditated in the woods, studied my Yamas and Niyamas, but inner peace is still an illusive little bugger!
